The Ministry of Social Rights has asked Spain’s Public Prosecutor’s Office, the Ombudsman, and the Office for Combating Hate Crimes to investigate whether Lamine Yamal’s 18th birthday party violated disability laws. These laws prohibit shows or entertainment that mock or denigrate people with disabilities.

According to statements given to EFE by Jesús Martín, Director General for Disability, the department headed by Pablo Bustinduy is seeking clarification on whether the event demeaned individuals with dwarfism. The law — which has been in place for nearly three years — explicitly forbids such acts, though it does not currently impose penalties.

The Spanish government is looking to address this legal gap. A proposed amendment — expected to be approved by the Council of Ministers this Tuesday — would classify public shows that exploit disabilities, such as the controversial “torero fireman” acts, as serious infractions, carrying fines ranging from €600,000 to €1 million.

Concern over influence on youth

Martín expressed concern over the potential impact the incident may have on young people:

It worries us that a young person with so many followers, someone who influences youth, hosts this kind of party, which could set a damaging example,” he said.

He added:

“It’s troubling when people with money and power act as if they are above the law. This has been illegal in Spain for almost three years, and Minister Bustinduy’s department will not sit idly by. The law is for everyone — for the humble and the powerful. Let the proper investigations take place, and once conclusions are reached, let justice be served.”

Legal action announced by Disability Rights Group

The Association of People with Achondroplasia and Other Skeletal Dysplasias (ADEE), part of Spain’s Confederation of People with Physical and Organic Disabilities (COCEMFE), announced legal action against Lamine Yamal for allegedly hiring individuals with dwarfism for entertainment at his party.

In a statement, the organization condemned the event, announcing both legal and social actions to “defend the dignity of people with disabilities.” They stated that what occurred at the FC Barcelona player’s celebration violates “not only current legislation but also the fundamental ethical values of a society that seeks equality and respect.”
